Hudson was appointed captain in the Union army in 1863. He later joined General Ulysses S. Grant at Vicksburg and was with him on his campaigns from Chattanooga and Culpeper to Appomatox. In April 1865 he was promoted to lieutenant-colonel and made General Grant's aide-de-camp.
