Letter attached to verso from donor reads: "This Original drawing of New York City was made by the late Wm E Marshall and purchased by me from Mrs. Marshall at thier[sic] studio # 711 Broadway = shortly after Mr Marshall died = Mrs Marshall informed me that the process Employed by Mr Marshall in Executing this sketch, was as follows. = The whole background was covered with black, then, using a pen knife Mr. M. cut the white outlines.
