Frances Sargent Locke, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Ingersoll) Foster Locke, was born in Boston and grew up in Higham, Massachusetts. The married the artist Samuel S. Osgood in 1835, and the couple sailed for England soon thereafter. Mrs. Osgood was a poet whose poems were published in several volumes. "The Cries of New York" (1846) appeared several years after her return to the United States in 1839.
