The subject, a native of Alsace, was born Mathilde Gisele Elizabeth Lowenguth, and later became the Comptesse de Waesemaer. She was the second wife of Rutherfurd Stuyvesant (d. 1909), the donor's uncle; she married Mr. Stuyvesant on June 15, 1902. She married her second husband, Prince Alexandre de Caraman Chimay, on August 18, 1933.
