Catherine Van Rensselaer was the daughter of John Van Rensselaer and Engeltje (Livingston) Van Rensselaer. She married Philip Schuyler in 1755, thus uniting two of the most prominent families of the Hudson Valley. The composition of the portrait is based on a mezzotint by Richard Houston after Francis Cotes's painting of Elizabeth, Dutchess of Hamilton, ca. 1752. The portrait was a gift to the Society from the subject's great-grandson.
