Sarah Ann Janeway was the daughter of George and Auftje (Ten Eyck) Janeway of New York City. Her father, a captain in the New York militia during the Revolution, was a man of substantial wealth and was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church. The subject married Peter Van Zandt (1764-1845), a prominent New York merchant, on January 16, 1791. They had ten children and lived at 135 Greene Street, in New York.
