This portrait was probably either executed in Philadelphia where the artist lived and worked or in Washington when the subject was in her last year as First Lady. According to Bowen ("Centennial of the Inauguration of George Washington," 1892, pp. 507-08), this portrait was originally in the Peale Museum in Philadelphia. The donor, Thomas J. Bryan, acquired it from the American Museum collection in 1863.
