Dolly Payne was born in what is now Guilford County, North Carolina, the eldest daughter of John and Mary (Coles) Payne. She married James Madison, her second husband, in 1794. This miniature portrait of her was copied from an original painted by Gilbert Stuart in 1804 (now in the collection of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts).
