Mary Appleton was the daughter of Daniel Fuller Appleton and Julia (Randall) Appleton, who were married in 1853. Her father was a wealthy merchant of New York and a founder of the Waltham Watch Company. She married Gerald Livingston Hoyt (d. 1926) in 1881.
