Emily Meredith Read, the daughter of General John Meredith Read, U.S. minister to Greece and consul general to France, was born in Albany, N.Y. She was a descendant of George Read, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. She married her first husband, Francis Acquilla Stout (d. 1892), president of the Nicaragua Canal Construction Co., on August 21, 1884. Her second husband was Edwards Spencer (d. 1911); they married in Paris on June 21, 1894.
