The identity of both mother and child in this portrait is open to question since the mother may be either the first or second wife of Daniel Truman of New Haven, Connecticut. His first wife whom he married in 1792 was Amelia Thompson, daughter of Isaac Thompson of New Haven. She died in 1803. His second wife whom he married two years later was Mary Thompson (ca. 1772-1838), daughter of Joseph Thompson of New Haven.
