Lucy Edwalyn Coffey was the daughter of Major Edward Lees Coffey of the British army and Lucy Edwalyn (Haxall) Coffey of Virginia. She was the wife of noted art critic Charles de Kay and an actress of "modest ability." The child pictured with Mrs. de Kay in this portrait is probably the youngest of the eight children.
