Emma Louise Burr was the eldest daughter of Henry A. Burr and Harriet Ann (Riblett) Burr of New York. She was married to Albert H. Wright, a business associate of her father's, on September 25, 1855. She divorced Wright about 1868 and became the second wife of Cornelius Henry Van Ness (1817-1911), a railroad executive; the couple lived on their estate at Cornwall-on-the-Hudson. Van Ness's third wife was the donor of this portrait.
