The stone lighthouse on Montauk Point at the extreme eastern end of Long Island, New York, was one of three on the Atlantic coast designed in the last decade of the eighteenth century by the artist's father, John McComb (1763-1853), architect. His earliest sructure was the lighthouse at Cape Henry, Virginia, designed in 1791; the Montauk tower designed in 1795 was the second and is the oldest on Long Island.
