The subject was a member of an old New York family. His wife, née Mary Spingler Fonerden, was the granddaughter of one of New York's wealthiest citizens, Christopher Henry Spingler. Mrs. Van Beuren inherited her grandfather's property, and her husband took over the management of the estate. The Van Beurens had twenty-two acres of land on what is now Union Square, and lived at 21 West 14th Street.
