Bronze struck medal with obverse showing clothed male bust facing left. Reverse bears inscription at center: "ENGINEER.FOR/40.YEARS.OF.THE/WATER./SUPPLY.OF/THE.CITY.OF.
NEW.YORK/1862 1926 [on decorative vignette with shell flanked by scrolls]/COLONEL.OF./ARTILLERY.IN/THE.GREAT.WAR"; surrounding legend: "MERRIT.HAVILAND.SMITH." Cream-colored square cardboard box.
Gallery Label:
Merritt Haviland Smith (1862-1926) served as Chief Engineer for the Bureau of Water Supply of New York City for 40 years. This medal appears to be a copy of the bronze plaque erected in his memory at Kensico Dam shortly after his death.
