Bronze struck medal with obverse showing accolated clothed bust of man and woman, facing right, with surrounding legend decorated with flowers: "ROBERT WEEKS DeFOREST EMILY JOHNSTON DeFOREST/1872 1922." Reverse depicts Arts and Crafts stylized acorn tree with stag head at center, flanked by flowers and dates "1637", at left, and "1804", at right; bird wings at bottom.
This medal commemorates the 50th wedding anniversary of Robert Weeks DeForest (1848-1931) and Emily Johnston DeForest (1851-1942). The couple, ardent collectors of American decorative arts, were instrumental in establishing the American Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. One of the city's best-known philanthropists and civic leaders, Robert DeForest served as president of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Charity Organization Society, the Russell Sage Foundation, among others.
