Silver struck medal with obverse showing boat oar and stanchion with rope at bottom; wreath at top above legend: "FOR/ HUMANITY AND HEROISM/ DISPLAYED IN/ RESCUING PASSENGERS/ AND CREW OF STEAMSHIP/ DANMARK/ IN MID OCEAN/ APRIL 1889" Reverse shows winged female figure holding bough amid nautical motifs; legend: "FROM THE CITIZENS OF PHILADELPHIA TO THE OFFICERS AND CREW OF ATLANTIC TRANSIT LINE S.S. MISSOURI." Loop fused to top, medal suspended by wrought ropes from pin-back bar with life-saving ring with wrapped rope inscribed in blue "MISSOURI" and red, white, and blue grosgrain ribbon.
