Bronze struck medal with obverse showing uniformed bust of Oliver H. Perry facing right with legend: "OLIVERUS H. PERRY. PRINCEPS STAGNO ERIENSE/CLASSIM TOTAM CONTUDIT." Reverse shows naval battle scene with legend: "VIAM INVENIT VITRUS AUT FACIT" and inscription below exergual line: "INTER CLASS. AMERI./ET BRIT. DIE X. SEP./MDCCCXIII."

The obverse and reverse dies of this medal were broken by July, 1866, but not replaced until 1869. When the obverse was replaced the artist's name was left off (as on this example). It is believed that "FURST" has not been used on any obverse die since 1866.
