Silver struck medal with obverse showing allegorical figure of Justice holding scales and sword, to the right are articles of commerce; sailing ships in the background; scroll at bottom inscribed: "INDUSTRY THE MEANS PLENTY THE RESULT"; legend: "MARYLAND INSTITUTE for the PROMOTION of the MECHANIC ARTS"; in exergue: "BALTIMORE." Reverse has space for engraving at center, surrounded by oak wreath, with legend at upper center: "AWARDED TO"; inscription: "Charles Volkert,/New York/For Inlaid/Picture in Frame/1855./Duplicate."
