Bronze struck medal with obverse showing full-length portrait of Howard on hoseback pursuing an enemy with winged allegorical figure of Victory holding laurel wreath above his head; legend: "JOH.EDGAR.HOWARD LEGIONIS PEDITUM PRAEFECTO" and inscription below exergual line: "COMITIA AMERICANA." Reverse bears inscription enclosed within laurel wreath: "QUOD/IN NUTANTEM HOSTIUM ACTEM/SUBITO IRRUENS/PRAECLARUM BELLICAE VIRTUTIS/SPECIMEN DEDIT/IN PUGNA AD COWPENS/XVII.JAN.MDCCLXXXI."
