Contemporary pewter struck replica of the Howard medal; obverse showing Howard, on horseback, pursuing an enemy, with winged Victory flying overhead and holding laurel wreath above him; legend: "JOH.EGAR.HOWARD LEGIONIS PEDITUM PRAEFECTO"; below exergual line: "COMITIA AMERICANA." Reverse contains inscription within laurel wreath: "QUOD/IN NUTANTEM HOSTIUM ACIEM/SUBITO IRRUENS/PRAECLARUM BELLICAE VIRTUTIS/SPECIMEN DEDIT/IN PUGNA AD COWPENS/XVII JAN MDCCLXXXI." Black rectangular plastic fitted case with red velvet paper lining.
