Object Number:
ca. 1800
Overall: 14 3/4 x 3 3/4 x 2 1/4 in. ( 37.5 x 9.5 x 5.7 cm )
engraved: on the handle: "THHB" in script stamped: on the underside of the handle: "W. FORBES" in a rectangle, "N-YORK" in a serrated rectangle
Silver ladle with downturned, pointed handle decorated with bright-cut engraved script initials, "THHB"; deep circular bowl has broad drop at reverse; maker's hallmarks stamped along underside of the handle.
Gallery Label:
The mark "W.FORBES" in a rectangle has been attributed to both William Garret Forbes and to his grandson William Forbes. The early stylistic features of this ladle, the bright-cut engraving, and the pointed handle suggest that it is the work of William Garret Forbes and not William Forbes as previously assigned.
