The centennial of George Washington's swearing in as President was a widely celebrated event. In New York, cloth banners with Washington's portrait were put up throughout Manhattan, especially around Washington Square. Originally erected as part of the celebration activities, the arch in Washington Square displayed this banner. This pennant was probably carried in a parade celebrating of the centennial of George Washington's inauguration as president on April 30, 1789.
