The subject was born in Philadelphia, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Bickley) Polegreen. Her father died when she was eight years old, and in 1734 her mother took her and her siblings to live in the West Indies. Two years later, when the subject was fourteen, her mother arranged her marriage to John Miller, by whom, according to legend, she had twenty children. According to the donor, this miniature was copied from a larger portrait painted about 1730.
