Description:
Salt-glazed stoneware jug with impressed and cobalt blue colored maker's mark.
Gallery Label:
Most utilitarian stoneware produced in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries was finished with a salt glaze, creating by tossing common table salt into the kiln during firing. The volatized elements produced a clear, glasslike finish that enhanced both the appearance and durability of the vessels.
