Salt-glazed stoneware jug with impressed retailer's mark and decorated with a cobalt blue leaf.

Stoneware vessels marked for grocers and other retailers are an early form of recycling. Customers filled vessels such as this jug from large barrels containing products like molasses or vinegar. After using the contents, the customer would go back to the store to refill or return the vessel.
