Gallery Label:
The subject was the only son of John Stillwell and Mercy (Burrowes) Stillwell of Middletown, New Jersey. He trained as a lawyer, fought in the local militia during the Revolutionary War, and was appointed to many public posts in Monmouth County, New Jersey. Her served as a justice of the peace, and as a member of the assembly from 1786 to 1802. This miniature was a gift to the Society from his great-grandson.
