John William Draper, M.D. (1811-1882)
Oil on canvas
Overall: 35 x 24 in. ( 88.9 x 61 cm )
Draper received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1836 and later joined the faculty of the University of the City of New York as professor of chemistry and physiology. He participated in the organization of its medical school in 1841, and later became its president. Dr. Draper was very interested in photography and was reportedly the first to make a daguerreotype in New York. This posthumous portrait may have been based on a portrait of Draper by Joseph Fagnani from ca. 1872.
