The subject, whose father came to the United States as warrant officer aboard a British man-of-war during the Revolutionary War, was born in his parents' house on Liberty Street in New York City. He was admitted to the bar and practiced law at 52 John Street. The Society's portraits of Mr. and Mrs. John Wallis were probably executed at the same time as the pendant portraits of their son Alexander Hamilton Wallis and his wife, which are also in the Society's collection.
