This miniature is a copy of Charles Willson Peale's bust-length oil portrait of Jones (now in the Independence Hall Collection, Philadelphia). Peale executed his likeness in Philadelphia, probably between February and August 1781, after Jones' triumphant return from France as an American naval hero. It has been suggested that miniature copies of Peale's original may have been made in the early 19th century by James Peale or Anna Claypoole Peale.
