The son of Robert Gillies of Scotland, John Gillies lived and worked in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia before moving to Charlestown, Massachusetts. By profession he was a shipbuilder. He later settled in New York. This miniature, a gift to the Society from the subject's grandson, was copied from an earlier miniature or photograph by Theodore Wust.
