Weekes was born at Oyster Bay, Long Island, the son of John Abeel and Alice Howland (Delano) Weekes. His grandfather, Robert Doughty Weekes, was the first president of the New York Stock Exchange. After graduating from Yale and Columbia Law School the subject entered his father's firm of Weekes and De Forest. The firm was later known as Weekes Brothers, and the subject became the senior partner. He was the twenty-first president of The New-York Historical Society, serving from 1913-39.
