Gallery Label:
James, the son of James A. (1729-99) and Sarah (Reade) De Peyster (1724-1802), was a brother of Abraham and Frederic De Peyster. He was a first lieutenant in the Fourth, or King's Regiment, which was commanded by Colonel Thomas James. The portrait was a gift to the Society from his grandniece.
