Henry James Genet (1800-1872)
Watercolor on ivory
Overall: 2 5/8 x 2 1/8 in. ( 6.7 x 5.4 cm )
The subject was the son of Edmond Charles Genet--"Citizen Genet"--minister of France under the Girondist government to the United States in 1793. The subject's mother was Cornelia (Clinton) Genet, daughter of Governor George Clinton of New York. He was born at his parents' farm in Greenbush, Rensselaer County, which he later represented in the state legislature. Genet, however, was primarily interested in the military, and ultimately attained the rank of major general.
