Economist, author, and founder of the Book of the Month Club, Harry Scherman was the son of Jacob and Katharine (Harris) Scherman, and was born in Montreal, Canada. From 1907 to 1916 he worked in journalism and advertising and then began to specialize in the promotion and publishing of books. This led to his organization of the Book of the Month Club in 1926, of which he was president from 1931 to 1950, and then chairman of the board until his death.
