The Scottish glengarry was worn as part of the full dress uniform of the 79th Regiment of the New York State Militia, who were also known as the "Highlanders," "Cameron Highlanders," "Highland Guard," and "Bannockburn Battalion." The regiment was formed in 1859 in New York City. In 1861 the full dress uniform included kilt, sporran, and knee-high stockings, along with the glengarry.
