Stuart, a native of North Kingston, R.I., was, by the early 1780s, one of the foremost portrait painters in London. After living and working for a few years in Dublin, he returned to America in 1792. He worked for two years in New York, and subsequently relocated to Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and finally Boston, where he remained the rest of his life.
