The subject was a Russian dancer, a member of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo when it toured the United States in 1940. He is represented in the costume of Eustace Tilley, a character in the ballet "The New Yorker," which was choreographed by Léonide Massine to music by George Gershwin. The ballet was a humorous work based on characters assembled from the pages of "The New Yorker" magazine.
