George Gerhard (1830-1902)

Gerhard was born in Hanau, Germany, studied art at the Hanover Drawing Academy, and established a reputation for himself in Germany as a painter of portraits. After working briefly in Paris he came to New York in 1859 where he portrayed such distinguished subjects as Ulysses S. Grant and Archbishop Corrigan.
