Silver struck medal with obverse showing clothed bust of Ulysses S. Grant facing right with four stars at lower left and seal of the American Numismatic Society below; legend: "GENERAL ULYSSES S. GRANT." Reverse shows elevation of Grant's tomb with legend above: "DEDICATED NEW YORK APRIL 27 1897"; inscription in exergue: "ISSUED BY THE AMERICAN NUMISMATIC/AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY." Blue square cardboard fitted case with dark red silk velvet lining.

This medal commemorates the dedication of Ulysses S. Grant's Tomb on 27 April, 1897, the 75th anniversary of Grant's birth. The Grant Monument Association, formed in 1885 after Grant's death, raised over $600,000 for the construction of a permanent memorial.
