General John Smith (1756-1816)

Born at Mastic, Long Island, Smith was a son of William Smith (1720-99) and Mary (Smith) Smith. He was a member of the New York state legislature from 1784 to 1799, served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1800 to 1804, and was a senator from New York from 1804 to 1813. In addition, he served as major general in the state militia and was a U.S. marshal for the district of New York from 1813 to 1815.
