The subject, a poet, architect, genealogist, and mathematician, was a native of Peekskill, New York. He studied architecture at Columbia, and a year at Harvard was devoted to classical literature. In 1887 he joined the faculty of architecture at Columbia, and taught there the rest of his life. He also lectured on mathematics and wrote a monumental genealogy of the Sherman family in America. His writings include "The Poems of Frank Dempster Sherman," published in 1917.
