maker's mark: inside top of crown: lion and unicorn flanking shield inscribed "HON[I] SOIT . . . MAL . . . [P]ENSE," with banner inscribed "CURA E . . . INDUSTRIA" below embroidered: on front of cap: "32 / GAR" embossed: on buttons: "GAR"
"Chasseur pattern" dark blue wool felt forage cap; black patent leather visor which is flat and somewhat rectangular; soft crown with circular, countersunk top; embroidered front insignia with "32 / GAR" between curved laurel branches; chin strap made of knotted gold cord secured at either side by a gilded metal button embossed with monogram "GAR"; brown leather sweatband and brown textile lining.
This cap was worn as part of the uniform of the Grand Army of the Republic. Other parts of the uniform, as well as a sword and scabbard, were also given by the donor.
