Rectangular wooden dovetail footlocker with 2 trays inside; handles on the sides, metal hinges at the back of the lid, metal hinge device for securing padlock; overall 8 compartments inside.
This footlocker belonged to Col. William Henry Paine, who served as a surveyor in the Army during the Civil War. Paine was responsible for devising systems and tools to better facilitate the surveyor's tasks, including patenting a coiled steel tape measure.
