Description:
Wool lithographed U.S. flag with thirty-six white stars in the blue canton (six rows of six); thirteen red and white stripes.
Gallery Label:
This U.S. flag hung over the apartments of John Austin Stevens at No. 4 Rue Glück, Paris during the entire Siege of Commune, 1870-1871. During the Siege Mr. Stevens and his family were in Normandy. During the Commune the family occupied the apartment on rue Glück which had a clear view through the trees to the Grand Opera House. Bullets were shot into the apartment.
