Cotton, metal grommets
Overall: 91 x 141 1/4 in. ( 231.1 x 358.8 cm )
Cotton machine-sewn U.S. flag with forty-five cotton stars appliqued to both sides of the canton (five rows of eight stars and one row of five, second from bottom); red and white stripes; white cotton hoist with grommets at each end (one missing) and two holes with cotton string tied through.
This flag belonged to Mrs. Louise Small, the donor's mother. She was active in the Daughters of the Grand Army of the Republic and in particular the John Brown Circle. The donor believed the flag was once owned by her grandfather who served with the Union Army in the Civil War.
