Four comb painted leather fire helmet; painted leather frontpiece with fire engine and inscriptions "ENGINEER" and "Z. M." in red and black on gold ground; gold painted leather frontpiece holder; textile half-lining with drawstring closure.

Zophar Mills (1809-1887) served as Assistant Engineer of the New York Volunteer Fire Dept. from 1838 to 1842. The donor is his daughter.
