These binoculars were received with documents from the donor that illuminate their interesting history. A letter dated December 29, 1917, and signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt, then Assistant Secretary of the Navy, thanks Mrs. Elsberg for responding to the Navy's call for binoculars, telescopes and spy-glasses, and a certificate acknowledges her donation. A third document indicates that the binoculars were used on the S.S. Yosemite, which sailed between New York and Bordeaux, France.
