Ivory brisé fan with round-tipped sticks joined by ivory-colored silk ribbon; guards with intricate relief carving of figures and dragons; sticks with figures, trees, pagodas, dragons, and central shield of solid ivory on ribbed ground; metal rivet with mother of pearl buttons.
According to the accession records, this fan was given to the donor's grandmother, Caroline Mathilda West Lyon, by an officer on Commodore Matthew C. Perry's expedition to Japan.
